Couple performing their first wedding dance after wedding dance lessons in Johannesburg
A confident first dance is the result of a few relaxed, well-planned lessons – not natural talent.

Your first dance is the one moment on your wedding day when every single guest is looking at just the two of you. For some couples that is exciting; for most it is the one part of the day they would quietly like to skip. The good news is that wedding dance lessons in Johannesburg turn that nervous three minutes into a highlight you will actually look forward to – and you do not need a single day of dance experience to get there.

In this guide we cover how first dance lessons work, how many sessions you really need, when to start, how to choose your song and what to expect from a personalised first dance choreography package in Sandton and greater Johannesburg.

Why take wedding dance lessons at all?

Couples usually book first dance lessons for one of three reasons. The first is nerves: shuffling in a slow circle while 120 people watch is awkward, and a simple routine removes the “what do we do with our hands” panic completely. The second is the photos and video – a dip, a spin or a proper hold photographs beautifully, and these are the pictures that end up framed. The third is simply that it is fun. Lessons are one of the few parts of wedding planning that you do together, away from spreadsheets and seating plans, and nearly every couple we teach tells us it became the highlight of their week.

There is also a practical point: a choreographed dance has a clear beginning, middle and end. You know when to walk on, what happens at the chorus, and how to finish so the DJ can open the floor. That structure is what makes you look relaxed.

How wedding dance lessons work

At First Wedding Dance every lesson is private – just the two of you and your instructor in the studio at Gallo Manor, Sandton. There are no group classes and no fixed syllabus. You choose the music, and we build a routine around that song, your dress, your venue and, honestly, how much you want to show off.

Your first session is mostly about getting comfortable: a basic hold, how to move together to the beat, and a feel for the style that suits your song. From there each session adds a section of the routine, so by the halfway point you can dance the whole song from start to finish, and the remaining lessons are spent polishing the details that make it look effortless. Everything is taught at your own pace, and you leave each session with something you can practise in the lounge during the week.

Private lessons mean the routine is built around your song, your dress and your venue.

How many first dance lessons do you need?

This is the question we get asked most, and the honest answer is: it depends on how elaborate you want the dance to be and how quickly you pick things up. That is why we offer three wedding dance packages rather than a single fixed course.

Package Sessions Best for
Basic 6 sessions Couples on a budget, or who feel they will learn quickly. A clean, simple routine that looks polished.
Deluxe 8 sessions Couples who want a little extra time to build in lifts, spins or a change of tempo and really settle the routine.
Prestige 10 sessions Couples who want to go all out – a surprise mash-up, a full choreographed showpiece, and the confidence of having perfected every step.

Our rule of thumb: practice makes perfect, so the more sessions you can fit in, the more relaxed you will be on the day. If you are unsure, start with the Basic package – you can always add sessions closer to the wedding.

Book your first lesson

When should you start first dance lessons?

For most Johannesburg couples, three to four months before the wedding is ideal. That gives you one lesson a week with a few days to practise in between, and leaves the final fortnight free for everything else that lands on a bride and groom’s plate. Starting earlier is fine – some couples book as soon as the venue is confirmed – but we recommend not leaving it later than six weeks out, especially if you are choosing the Deluxe or Prestige package.

Wedding season in Gauteng runs from September through April, and Saturday morning and weekday evening slots fill first, so if you are getting married over summer it is worth getting in touch early to secure a regular time.

Choosing your first dance song

You do not have to settle on the song before your first lesson, but it helps. A few things we have learnt from choreographing hundreds of first dances:

Tempo matters more than genre. A slow ballad can be beautiful but is harder to fill than you expect – three and a half minutes of slow dancing is a long time. Mid-tempo songs are the easiest to make look good. If your heart is set on a slow song, we can edit it down or build in a tempo change.

Edit the song. Most first dances work best at around two to two and a half minutes. We can suggest an edit point so the routine ends on a strong moment rather than fading out.

Surprise routines are always a hit. Starting with a classic waltz and breaking into something your guests will not see coming is one of the most popular requests we get – and one of our couples’ favourite memories.

Your dress is part of the choreography. Tell us about the dress early. Big skirts, trains and fitted gowns all change what we can safely build in. (One of our couples pulled off a jump in a very full dress – but only because we planned for it.)

The goal is not perfection – it is a dance you enjoy enough to smile through.

Wedding dance styles we teach

Whether you are looking for a classic waltz or a contemporary dance routine, we can bring your vision to life. Popular choices for Johannesburg weddings include the slow waltz and rumba for romantic ballads, foxtrot and swing for jazz standards and older classics, contemporary and lyrical routines for modern pop and R&B, and surprise mash-up routines that mix two or three songs for a big reaction. Many couples also ask us to choreograph a father-daughter dance or mother-son dance alongside the first dance, and we are happy to teach the bridal party a short group routine as well.

What couples say

We could tell you our lessons are relaxed and fun, but our couples say it better. Leon and Naledi wrote to say the training “made all the difference and our guests loved it… the dance was a surprise to everyone – even us!” Robyn and Hilan told us “you cannot believe how much our guests loved our dance. We had so many compliments and we felt so special.” And Hoda and Omandi summed up what we are aiming for with every couple: “it literally added so much magic to our wedding day.” You can see more of their dances in our gallery.

Frequently asked questions

How many wedding dance lessons do we need?

Yes. You choose the music and we create a routine tailored specifically to you – from a classic waltz to a contemporary or surprise mash-up routine.
